The Cheyne Centre

The Children’s Trust, a charity dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of children with multiple disabilities and complex health needs, commissioned Avanti Architects to develop a ten year masterplan for the development of a campus within the grounds of their Grade I listed mansion. The first 4 phases include the design of a new therapy centre, conversion of the existing school, the construction of two new residential houses, and the conversion of one of the existing residential houses, are now complete.
The Therapy and Research Centre was designed in full consultation with the therapists, achieving a stimulating rather than ‘institutional’ environment. The need to ensure zoning, passive supervision and dignity within hygiene spaces has influenced the plan layout.
The use of colour and natural daylight as a wayfinding tool has also been central to the interior design of communication and teaching spaces. The buildings reinforce the connection to nature and the mature landscape with direct access from rooms to outside spaces.
