Portadown Health & Care Centre

County Armagh

The design of this large primary care project provided an opportunity to investigate how a building of this type can be future-proofed, by incorporating measures to facilitate flexibility of use, and by achieving the highest standards of sustainable design.

The standardised floorplate depth suits a wide variety of uses, whilst moveable link bridges connect a central lift and stair core to each clinic, allowing department entrances to be easily relocated in response to changing needs. The drainage and services strategies also support changes in how the building is used in future.

As well as being very flexible, the new building provides an exemplary environment for all users. It is organised around a generously scaled central atrium, which is enclosed by curving timber-clad walls, creating a stunning first impression upon entering the building.
