Pontefract Hospital
West YorkshireThis PFI project is a model for a new type of community hospital that delivers a range of non-acute services for its local population. It includes ambulatory and short stay treatment and diagnostics, OPD, minor injuries based Accident and Emergency, midwife-led delivery unit and a rehabilitation centre.
The building is carefully integrated into a steeply sloping site just outside the town centre, with a building form that reflects the functions it contains: a two storey courtyard building provides outpatient accommodation, while the surrounding taller L-shaped block houses more heavily serviced and private zones. Between these two wings a three storey atrium provides all public functions and aids intuitive wayfinding.
