Mayow Road Housing
LondonAvanti Architects have undertaken the masterplanning and delivery of new housing and a special needs school providing much needed new social infrastructure in the borough. Our Mayow Road housing project, opposite Greenvale School, delivers 26 council homes for families with temporary housing needs, together with 6 supported living apartments for young adults. The project, is a flagship development by Lewisham Council who are seeking to address acute housing needs within the borough.
Lewisham sees the new development as setting a benchmark for delivery of high quality council housing meeting needs that are not adequately met by the market. The design provides an exemplary, inclusive form of development, with supported living forming part of the ensemble. The temporary accommodation apartments provide medium-term secure accommodation for families for up to two years.
The site is located on the edge of Mayow Park, benefiting from existing mature trees on the site frontage and on the park edge, providing a sympathetic context for the supported living cluster, which includes a quiet, secluded courtyard to the rear of the site next to the park. Avanti have adopted a palette of high quality materials and details that respond to the wider context, with variations in detailing that characterise the main entrances and lower storeys. Generous balconies are inset within the facade and full-height windows are provided throughout, with storey levels articulated through bands of vertical brick coursing.
Mayow Road housing forms part of a wider redevelopment that includes Avanti’s proposals for the Greenvale School extension opposite.
