Long View

Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire

Long View lies adjacent to Past Field house, built in 1960 (now listed Grade II) to the design of the distinguished architect Patrick Gwynne for Dr and Mrs Salmon.
The brief was for a contemporary family house with a flexible living/dining/kitchen arrangement including a space for music making, four bedrooms, a workshop for piano repair, a small study and ample storage and service space. Natural daylight was a priority as well as a fluid relationship between indoors and outdoors with a covered external dining area. The pinwheel plan was designed to take maximum advantage of the southern outlook, some fine existing trees and natural features including an old Victorian rockery. The aim was to create a composition that complements the listed building in terms of form and material while having a clear identity of its own.
