Grangewood
DerryThis mental health unit is designed to deliver a new model of care: flexible, short term residential care for people normally resident in the community, in conjunction with an enhanced home treatment service.
Extensive consultation with staff, service users and carers, has balanced functionality with the need to create varied and attractive environments that support recovery.
Particular attention has been given to linking internal and external spaces: each ward and the day centre are arranged around a double height space, flooded with natural light and overlooking gardens. Linking all internal zones is a curving timber-lined foyer with full height glazing on all sides providing views to landscaped courtyards.
The design of the enclosure to the secure gardens, and the integration of the building into the landscape, ensures security without creating a feeling of being penned-in.
