ACAD Central Middlesex Hospital

London

This is the first ambulatory care and diagnostic centre in Europe and has been described as a seminal healthcare building in the UK.

Avanti Architects were appointed after an international design competition. The client selected a team who could deliver both an innovative design process and a strong architectural presence.

The brief rejected the use of traditional design guidance. Instead, the principles of ‘lean thinking’ were applied to a total process redesign. Using people/process mapping software the building form was tested against the process and vice versa.

‘The really special thing about ACAD is that it works as well for staff as it does for patients. The public areas are serene and relaxing, while the work areas are extraordinarily functional and pleasing. The details have been meticulously thought through.’
