Paul Murphy

Consultant

Grad Dip Arch, Dip Arch, RIBA, ARB

Paul has recently rejoined Avanti Architects, having founded and ran his own company, Paul Murphy Architects which specialised in the design of education, healthcare, residential and commercial projects. The breadth and range of experience  forms a natural synergy with the work undertaken by Avanti.

Paul founded Paul Murphy Architects in 2007 and ran the award winning practice for sixteen years before establishing Murphy Ballance Consulting with Fiona Ballance.

As a qualified architect with 35 years’ experience encompassing both the public and private sectors, Paul has worked on a diverse range of projects ranging from £80k to £80m, designing a broad range of building types, involving masterplanning, new facilities and working with existing buildings. Key projects including the masterplanning of St Augustine’s Priory; the reconfiguration and extension to St Christina’s Preparatory School; completing over twenty projects for UCL, including the Bloomsbury Theatre; a new business school for Royal Holloway, University of London; a new public mortuary for Surrey County Council; a private patient’s facility and radiotherapy suite for Basingstoke Hospital; masterplanning Ashford & St Peter’s Hospital and the execution of fifteen individual projects across the two campuses; and the Hand & Flower residential project on Kings Road, Chelsea.

Paul has a passion for design and it’s transformative benefits and has a particular interest in the development of project briefs and in exploring how design can improve and enhance the experience of the built environment. This reflects a deep understanding of both the subject and the desire to engage with multiple stakeholders who share a vested interest in the design and quality of the built reality.

Originally educated at the Polytechnic of the Southbank, (now London South Bank University) and the Polytechnic of Central London (now University of Westminster), Paul became a member of the RIBA in 1990. Paul began his architectural career in 1978 when he was trained and educated through an early form of apprenticeship scheme with the Property Services Agency (PSA), the UK Government’s property arm responsible for managing the Crown Estate.  During this time Paul worked on several key historic buildings in Whitehall. After gaining a distinction for his undergraduate degree, Paul was sponsored by the PSA to complete his full-time postgraduate course.

Following graduation, Paul went on to work for Avanti Architects between 1992 and 1994, designing acute and primary healthcare projects as well as social housing schemes across London. In 1994, Paul joined Todd Architects and oversaw the set-up of their London practice, later becoming a director of the practice in 1997 and equity partner in 2001. Over this period Paul designed and delivered key projects in the UK and Ireland including: the masterplan and development of Kingston University’s Kingston Hill Campus, the 100,000sq ft business park in Bracknell and the 450,000sqft research, development and production space for Abbott Laboratories in Oxfordshire.

Paul was formerly a Design Council Built Environment Expert (BEE) and was elected as Secretary to Architects for Health between 2010 and 2020, where he still contributes to the annual Architects for Health Student Design Awards. He has previously taught at undergraduate and diploma level at London’s South Bank University between 2012 and 2018.
