The need to revisit integrated health centres

Justin De Syllas has contributed a comment piece to the RIBA Journal which draws upon the research he carried out while writing his new book, ‘Integrating Care: the architecture of the comprehensive health centre’.

In his article Justin gives an overview of how the concept of the integrated health centre has evolved in the UK from 1920 to today, and how particularly in England political pressures and a drive to create competition in primary care services has prevented true integration from being achieved.

Lessons can be learnt, however, from the more integrated approaches developed in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, which suggest that well designed facilities can contribute to both a more efficient service and a more pleasant experience for patients and staff.
