Quinan Stove, Waltham abbey gunpowder mills

Avanti Architects has been commissioned to record, develop a conservation strategy and undertake trial repairs on the Quinan Stove at Waltham Abbey Gunpowder Mills. The Quinan stove, is a highly innovative building constructed between 1935-37 which transformed the drying and production of Cordite.  The buildings special interest is by way of its status as an early example of concrete industrial construction, a template for many other World War II munitions structures and its association with KB Quinan, one of the most significant and innovative figures of the early twentieth century explosives industry.  The structure is part of an Ancient Scheduled Monument and identified by Historic England as ‘heritage at risk’.
