Our Greenvale School Expansion project has been shortlisted for the Building London Planning Awards. These awards, organised by BusinessLDN (with partners including the GLA, RTPI, the Planning Officer’s Society, and the BAME Planners Network) celebrate innovative projects that are leaders in design and sustainability across the capital.
The project for the London Borough of Lewisham is shortlisted in the ‘Best Borough Led Project’ category. The scheme accommodates 93 secondary school pupils with severe learning difficulties as an extension to Greenvale School (the original school was also designed by Avanti) for pupils in Key Stage 5 (aged 16-19). The proposals meet the high aspirations of the client and school leadership to create an exemplary learning environment geared towards older pupils that prepares them for the future through a tailored programme including life skills and work training.
The approach to the site meets the need for secure bus drop off and pick-up whilst maintaining an open public-facing frontage on a tight site. The landscape caters to a range of play and sensory therapeutic activities, reinforcing the green buffer on the site boundary.
The scheme was masterplanned in conjunction with our Mayow Road housing project and creates a new hub for social provision in the south of the Borough. Michael Forrester, Head of Development Management Lewisham Council stated:
“The new Mayow Road temporary and specialist housing and Greenvale School are truly positive additions to Mayow Road delivering genuinely affordable homes and brand new education space. It has been a pleasure to work with Avanti Architects on both projects, from pre-application stage where contextually sensitive, high quality designs were drawn up, and architectural quality secured through planning and construction phases.”
