In keeping with its long-term strategy to complement the high quality of care provided, Sheffield Children’s Hospital began modernisation of the patient accommodation with a design competition in 2012, starting on site in 2014. The project delivers a new hospital building, the refurbishment of the adjacent existing wing and the rebuilding of a Victorian villa, which will provide specialist diagnostic and treatment areas, outpatients consulting suites, three wards and a new public face for the hospital through a new hospital main entrance. The design strategy ties together the old hospital buildings on the site through new construction, enabling better links between departments while resolving convoluted circulation routes and level changes to make the hospital more navigable.
Children and their families arriving at the hospital will enter through a light-filled atrium, at the heart of which is located the sculptural ‘playtube’, which offers play space in a fun, non-institutional environment while visually placing children and play at the heart of the hospital. Ward areas have been carefully designed to deliver high standards of observation, natural light, and child-friendly interior design that is non-specific to age or gender. The project provides the hospital with a smoother journey through its services, centralised play spaces and more single rooms with en-suite facilities for parents staying with their child.
To reinforce the hospital’s transformation, Artist Place-maker Morag Myerscough was commissioned by Artfelt, the arts programme at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, to provide child-appropriate bedroom environments, co-designed with Avanti Architects, users and patients. These rooms have already won a number of design awards, and have been widely documented in the press, for their fresh approach and uplifting use of integrated colour and pattern.
