Duncan joined Avanti in 1996, drawn by the opportunity to create architecture that makes a positive social contribution, and has subsequently worked predominantly on healthcare projects, enjoying the opportunity to engage with a huge range of project sizes, clinical needs and logistical challenges.
Duncan’s experience ranges from devising redevelopment strategies for NHS Trusts, to the design of children’s hospitals, special needs accommodation and mental healthcare facilities. He has taken a leading role in the design development of a series of competition-winning designs, including in recent years for major projects at the Children’s Hospital in Sheffield, and Torbay Hospital, which have successfully reconciled potentially contradictory functional, logistical and urban design aspirations through an approach that combines analysis and spatial ingenuity.
For Duncan, the act of drawing by hand is an essential design tool, and he is the proud user of the last parallel motion drawing board at Avanti Architects.
