Avanti Architect’s nominated year out students Eduard Tipaldo and Yuntong Mu to participate in the 2014 annual charette organized by Architect’s for Health in collaboration with London South Bank University and sponsored by Brookfield Multiplex. This year students were asked to prepare a design for a new hospital tower on a site adjacent to the current Guy’s Tower and the Shard, Europe’s tallest building. The brief entitled ‘Tower of Health, Can skyscrapers be good for you?’ is to be a civic gesture as a riposte to London’s skyline dominated by skyscrapers of city institutions where hospital programmatic features come in relationship with the fabric of the city.
The award-winning proposition came from Eduard and his team for their concept of a series of civic towers that complement each other to heighten the awareness of health and community, within the creation of a multi-layered vertical high-street. The jury, which included Alastair Gourlay, Programme Director of Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital Estates, and Ivan Harbour of RSHP, commended the students for their sensible response to the client’s requirements and great considerations for the patient’s experience.
